Melinda Campbell received her doctoral degree in philosophy from the University of California, Davis in 1993, where she specialized in metaphysics, epistemology, and aesthetics. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in fine art and started her career as a painter. Her dissertation was in the area of color ontology and argued the case for the "subjective realism" of color.
She has been teaching for National University since 1999, starting as an adjunct and online course developer. She formally joined the National faculty at the level of Associate Faculty Professor in June of 2008 and was promoted to full Professor in 2020. Currently, Professor Campbell continues her research in color ontology as well as in philosophy of mind and aesthetics. In addition to teaching undergraduate courses in philosophy, she also creates, designs, and develops online course templates for courses in both philosophy and art.
Professor Campbell's most recent publications include “Unfolding the Layers of Mind and World: Wellner’s Posthuman Digital Imagination,” Foundations of Science (2021). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10699-020-09767-w and “The Digital Classroom: A Marketplace of Ideas or Just a Marketplace?” in Proceedings of the Society for Phenomenology and Media 4 (2017) 13-22. Additional publications on the topic of color ontology and the phenomenology of color perception include “Seeing Color Appearances,” in Glimpse 15 (2014) 13-18, and “Epistemic Error and Experiential Evidence,” in Glimpse 14 (2012) 19-29. She has also co-authored an article with William Hirstein entitled, "Aesthetics & the Experience of Beauty," which appears in the 2009 edition of the Elsevier Encyclopedia of Consciousness.
Additional publications in the philosophy of pedagogy include “Collaborating on Critical Thinking: The Team Critique,” in Journal of Curriculum and Teaching, 4(2), (November 2015) 86-95. and another article, co-written with Dr. Maryam Davodi-Far, entitled, " “Making Education Ethical: Mentoring for a Green Future.” In Cross Examination of the Core: An Interdisciplinary Focus on Authentic Learning, Eds. Professor Campbell is currently working on several projects that include, in addition to her work in color ontology, an investigation of the nature of dream consciousness and how it relates to and can inform us about consciousness in general as well as specific capabilities humans have in the realm of aesthetic creation and judgment.
