NU Merger FAQs
Northcentral University was established in 1996 as a graduate-oriented online university offering a diverse array of doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate programs in a one-to-one learning model with mentor support to provide personalized and professionally relevant education. NCU became part of National University System in 2019 and is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). Northcentral University merged with National University in fall 2022, which was also accredited by WSCUC.
Yes, in limited circumstances, the merged institution is currently in the process of integrating systems, programs, and websites, which will take some time. Therefore, some students may continue to see examples of NCU branding until the integration process is completed. During the transition, students who were enrolled in NCU programs prior to and after the merger have the option to finish their programs in the same format as they began them. Upon graduation, they also may choose whether to have the Northcentral University or National University name printed on their diplomas.
Northcentral University and National University were both part of the National University System. We combined the two institutions because of their complementary strengths and aligned missions. In doing so, we created a unified institution that provides students with a full range of market-relevant programs and innovative learning opportunities to prepare them for tomorrow’s jobs today. Through the merger, NU is further able to enhance our services, degree offerings, and resources and expand access to affordable education as a leading university for adult learners.
National University’s mission and historic commitment to advancing educational opportunities for students of diverse backgrounds, including adult learners, aligned with NCU’s mission. The merger brought together each institution’s strengths and services with the goal of delivering a world-class educational experience for all learners.
The merger is expected to enhance and strengthen academic pathways that align with National University’s direction as a nonprofit dedicated to investing in student services and providing quality and affordable higher education. It will provide opportunities to grow and diversify degree offerings in addition to delivering stronger student services and outcomes.
The faculty have not changed due to the merger. NCU faculty have joined the NU team. The organization of NU’s academic leadership team has been restructured to further the university’s mission. View the NU Leadership webpage for more information.

Yes, National University is regionally accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which is part of the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). This was also NCU’s accreditor.
Yes, the Commission sent notification on June 30, 2022, that it had approved the merger of National University and Northcentral University.
NCU students became NU students at the time of the merger, but they were given the option to complete their degrees in the same format and modality under which they were studying at NCU. At the conclusion of their degrees, NCU students who were part of the university at the time of the merger have the option to graduate from NCU or NU.
